  1. general description the PCA9674/74a provide general purpose remote i/o expansion for most microcontroller families via the two-line bidirectional bus (i 2 c-bus) and is a part of the fast-mode plus (fm+) family. the PCA9674/74a is a drop-in upgrade for the pcf8574/74a providing higher fast-mode plus i 2 c-bus speeds (1 mhz versus 400 khz) so that the output can support pwm dimming of leds, higher i 2 c-bus drive (30 ma versus 3 ma) so that many more devices can be on the bus without the need for bus buffers, higher total package sink capacity (200 ma versus 100 ma) that supports having all leds on at the same time and more device addresses (64 versus 8) are available to allow many more devices on the bus without address con?icts. the devices consist of an 8-bit quasi-bidirectional port and an i 2 c-bus interface. the PCA9674/74a have low current consumption and include latched outputs with 25 ma high current drive capability for directly driving leds. they also possess an interrupt line ( int) that can be connected to the interrupt logic of the microcontroller. by sending an interrupt signal on this line, the remote i/o can inform the microcontroller if there is incoming data on its ports without having to communicate via the i 2 c-bus. the internal power-on reset (por) or software reset sequence initializes the i/os as inputs. 2. features n 1 mhz i 2 c-bus interface n compliant with the i 2 c-bus fast and standard modes n sda with 30 ma sink capability for 4000 pf buses n 2.3 v to 5.5 v operation with 5.5 v tolerant i/os n 8-bit remote i/o pins that default to inputs at power-up n latched outputs with 25 ma sink capability for directly driving leds n total package sink capability of 200 ma n active low open-drain interrupt output n 64 programmable slave addresses using 3 address pins n readable device id (manufacturer, device type, and revision) n low standby current n - 40 c to +85 c operation n esd protection exceeds 2000 v hbm per jesd22-a114, 200 v mm per jesd22-a115, and 1000 v cdm per jesd22-c101 PCA9674/74a remote 8-bit i/o expander for fm+ i 2 c-bus with interrupt rev. 02 12 october 2006 product data sheet

PCA9674_PCA9674a_2 ? nxp b.v. 2006. all rights reserved. product data sheet rev. 02 12 october 2006 11 of 34 nxp semiconductors PCA9674/74a remote 8-bit i/o expander for fm+ i 2 c-bus with interrupt 7.2.1 software reset the software reset call allows all the devices in the i 2 c-bus to be reset to the power-up state value through a speci?c formatted i 2 c-bus command. to be performed correctly, it implies that the i 2 c-bus is functional and that there is no device hanging the bus. the software reset sequence is de?ned as following: 1. a start command is sent by the i 2 c-bus master. 2. the reserved general call i 2 c-bus address 0000 000 with the r/ w bit set to 0 (write) is sent by the i 2 c-bus master. 3. the PCA9674/74a device(s) acknowledge(s) after seeing the general call address 0000 0000 (00h) only. if the r/ w bit is set to 1 (read), no acknowledge is returned to the i 2 c-bus master. 4. once the general call address has been sent and acknowledged, the master sends 1 byte. the value of the byte must be equal to 06h. a. the PCA9674/74a acknowledges this value only. if the byte is not equal to 06h, the PCA9674/74a does not acknowledge it. if more than 1 byte of data is sent, the PCA9674/74a does not acknowledge any more. 5. once the right byte has been sent and correctly acknowledged, the master sends a stop command to end the software reset sequence: the PCA9674/74a then resets to the default value (power-up value) and is ready to be addressed again within the speci?ed bus free time. if the master sends a repeated start instead, no reset is performed. the i 2 c-bus master must interpret a non-acknowledge from the PCA9674/74a (at any time) as a software reset abort. the PCA9674/74a does not initiate a reset of its registers. the unique sequence that initiates a software reset is described in figure 11 . fig 10. device id address r/w 002aac116 1 1 1 1 1 0 0 fig 11. software reset sequence 002aac262 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 a s 0 swrst call i 2 c-bus address start condition r/w acknowledge from slave(s) 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 swrst data = 06h a acknowledge from slave(s) p PCA9674/74a is(are) reset. registers are set to default power-up values.
PCA9674_PCA9674a_2 ? nxp b.v. 2006. all rights reserved. product data sheet rev. 02 12 october 2006 12 of 34 nxp semiconductors PCA9674/74a remote 8-bit i/o expander for fm+ i 2 c-bus with interrupt 7.2.2 device id (PCA9674/74a id ?eld) the device id ?eld is a 3-byte read-only (24 bits) word giving the following information: ? 8 bits with the manufacturer name, unique per manufacturer (for example, nxp). ? 13 bits with the part identi?cation, assigned by manufacturer, the 7 msbs with the category id and the 6 lsbs with the feature id (for example, for example PCA9674/74a 16-bit quasi-output i/o expander). ? 3 bits with the die revision, assigned by manufacturer (for example, rev x). the device id is read-only, hardwired in the device and can be accessed as follows: 1. start command 2. the master sends the reserved device id i 2 c-bus address 1111 100 with the r/ w bit set to 0 (write). 3. the master sends the i 2 c-bus slave address of the slave device it needs to identify. the lsb is a dont care value. only one device must acknowledge this byte (the one that has the i 2 c-bus slave address). 4. the master sends a re-start command. remark: a stop command followed by a start command will reset the slave state machine and the device id read cannot be performed. remark: a stop command or a re-start command followed by an access to another slave device will reset the slave state machine and the device id read cannot be performed. 5. the master sends the reserved device id i 2 c-bus address 1111 100 with the r/ w bit set to 1 (read). 6. the device id read can be done, starting with the 8 manufacturer bits (?rst byte + 4 msb of the second byte), followed by the 13 part identi?cation bits and then the 3 die revision bits (3 lsb of the third byte). 7. the master ends the reading sequence by nacking the last byte, thus resetting the slave device state machine and allowing the master to send the stop command. remark: the reading of the device id can be stopped anytime by sending a nack command. remark: if the master continues to ack the bytes after the third byte, the PCA9674/74a rolls back to the ?rst byte and keeps sending the device id sequence until a nack has been detected. for the PCA9674/74a, the device id is as shown in figure 12 . fig 12. PCA9674_PCA9674a_2 ? nxp b.v. 2006. all rights reserved. product data sheet rev. 02 12 october 2006 28 of 34 nxp semiconductors PCA9674/74a remote 8-bit i/o expander for fm+ i 2 c-bus with interrupt 15. handling information inputs and outputs are protected against electrostatic discharge in normal handling. however, to be completely safe you must take normal precautions appropriate to handling integrated circuits. 16. soldering 16.1 introduction there is no soldering method that is ideal for all surface mount ic packages. wave soldering can still be used for certain surface mount ics, but it is not suitable for ?ne pitch smds. in these situations re?ow soldering is recommended. 16.2 through-hole mount packages 16.2.1 soldering by dipping or by solder wave typical dwell time of the leads in the wave ranges from 3 seconds to 4 seconds at 250 c or 265 c, depending on solder material applied, snpb or pb-free respectively. the total contact time of successive solder waves must not exceed 5 seconds. the device may be mounted up to the seating plane, but the temperature of the plastic body must not exceed the speci?ed maximum storage temperature (t stg(max) ). if the printed-circuit board has been pre-heated, forced cooling may be necessary immediately after soldering to keep the temperature within the permissible limit. 16.2.2 manual soldering apply the soldering iron (24 v or less) to the lead(s) of the package, either below the seating plane or not more than 2 mm above it. if the temperature of the soldering iron bit is less than 300 c it may remain in contact for up to 10 seconds. if the bit temperature is between 300 c and 400 c, contact may be up to 5 seconds. 16.3 surface mount packages 16.3.1 re?ow soldering key characteristics in re?ow soldering are: ? lead-free versus snpb soldering; note that a lead-free re?ow process usually leads to higher minimum peak temperatures (see figure 29 ) than a pbsn process, thus reducing the process window ? solder paste printing issues including smearing, release, and adjusting the process window for a mix of large and small components on one board ? re?ow temperature pro?le; this pro?le includes preheat, re?ow (in which the board is heated to the peak temperature) and cooling down. it is imperative that the peak temperature is high enough for the solder to make reliable solder joints (a solder paste characteristic). in addition, the peak temperature must be low enough that the

[2] all surface mount (smd) packages are moisture sensitive. depending upon the moisture content, the maximum temperature (with respect to time) and body size of the package, there is a risk that internal or external package cracks may occur due to vapori zation of the moisture in them (the so called popcorn effect). [3] for sdip packages, the longitudinal axis must be parallel to the transport direction of the printed-circuit board. [4] hot bar soldering or manual soldering is suitable for pmfp packages. [5] these transparent plastic packages are extremely sensitive to re?ow soldering conditions and must on no account be processed through more than one soldering cycle or subjected to infrared re?ow soldering with peak temperature exceeding 217 c 10 c measured in the atmosphere of the re?ow oven. the package body peak temperature must be kept as low as possible. [6] these packages are not suitable for wave soldering. on versions with the heatsink on the bottom side, the solder cannot pene trate between the printed-circuit board and the heatsink. on versions with the heatsink on the top side, the solder might be deposite d on the heatsink surface. [7] if wave soldering is considered, then the package must be placed at a 45 angle to the solder wave direction. the package footprint must incorporate solder thieves downstream and at the side corners. [8] wave soldering is suitable for lqfp, qfp and tqfp packages with a pitch (e) larger than 0.8 mm; it is de?nitely not suitable for packages with a pitch (e) equal to or smaller than 0.65 mm. [9] wave soldering is suitable for ssop, tssop, vso and vssop packages with a pitch (e) equal to or larger than 0.65 mm; it is de?nitely not suitable for packages with a pitch (e) equal to or smaller than 0.5 mm.
